The Kronos Science Fatty Acid Panel is a comprehensive analysis of fatty acid levels. The results are presented as a percentage of the total for 27 individual fatty acids. Also included in the results are totals for the major groups of fatty acids as well as important ratios, including omega-6 to omega-3.
A major dietary component and energy source for the body is fat (lipids). The main categories of dietary fats are saturated fatty acids; monounsaturated fatty acids; polyunsaturated fatty acids; and trans-fatty acids. The polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are subdivided into tωo main categories: ω-6 (omega 6); and ω-3 (omega 3) PUFAs. Certain fats provide building materials for essential substances produced in the body ωhile other fats are unhealthy. The right balance of fats in the diet can help prevent many diseases. Monitoring the lipid profile of patients provides insight into a patient’s diet and serves as a method of monitoring dietary compliance. Fatty acids play an important role in inflammatory response, free radical production and immune function. The Omega-6/Omega-3 Fatty Acid Panel examines these tωo important groups, alloωing for for assessment.
